From Shoreline to Mesquite Dune: Changing Subsistence Strategies at Ca-riv-4754, La Quinta
نویسنده
چکیده
CA-AIV-4754 was investigated during the summer of 1997 as part of the City of La Quinta's Adams Street widening project. This well-stratified sand dune deposit was initially an encampment associated with the exploitation of fish during the last stand of ancient Lake Cahuilla. With the desiccation of the lake the site remained in use sporadically and exhibited a change in sUbsistence practices reflecting a switch from a lakeside to an arid mesquite thicket environment.

Evaluation of Nicotiana otophora as a Source of Resistance to Meloidogyne incognita Race 4 for Tobacco.
No currently available tobacco cultivar possesses resistance to Meloidogyne incognita race 4, nor has any source of resistance been reported within Nicotiana tabacum. The purpose of this study was to evaluate N. otophora acc. La Quinta as a source of resistance to this pathogen. Plants of tobacco cvs. NC 95 and NC 2326, N. otophora La Quinta and N. repanda were inoculated with second-stage juve...
متن کاملResponses of Dune Plant Communities to Continental Uplift from a Major Earthquake: Sudden Releases from Coastal Squeeze
Vegetated dunes are recognized as important natural barriers that shelter inland ecosystems and coastlines suffering daily erosive impacts of the sea and extreme events, such as tsunamis. However, societal responses to erosion and shoreline retreat often result in man-made coastal defence structures that cover part of the intertidal and upper shore zones causing coastal squeeze and habitat loss...
متن کاملManagement of Lake Huron’s Beach and Dune Ecosystems: Building up from the Grassroots
Dune systems along the southeastern shores of Lake Huron have become severely impacted as the result of increases in recreational activities and shoreline development. Dune conservation activities at Lake Huron’s provincial parks have occurred only within the past 20 to 25 years. Activities on dunes outside of the parks, including municipal and private lands, have only occurred within the last ...
متن کاملError Determination in the Photogrammetric Assessment of Shoreline Changes
The evaluation of error or uncertainty in shoreline change studies is an issue of prime importance for providing an adequate framework for calculated rates of change, and to allow the establishment of threshold values above which the rates would be significant. In this note a practical, easy-to-use method is presented to estimate error involved in the calculation of shoreline changes on aerial ...
متن کاملComputational simulations of blown sand fluxes over the surfaces of complex microtopography
Studies of sand saltation are currently concentrating on wind tunnel experiments, theoretical analyses and numerical simulations under ideal as well as controllable conditions. These theoretical analyses and numerical simulations cannot accurately predict sand movements in field environments. In this paper, we simulate wind field patterns for two different surfaces of complex microtopography us...
